SR20DET Rebuild – Part 2 – The long wait

So it has been a month and I thought it was time for a bit of an update. I have been busy ordering parts but not much building going on, still waiting on last bits and pieces before I can really get going.

I sent the block, crankshaft and head off to the machinist and it turns out that overall the engine is in good nick but there are a few problems.

Despite the fact that the bores look immaculate, down the bottom they are out of tolerance so it is going to need a rebore. The machinist also strongly recommended that the crankshaft get a re-grind as there was a fair bit of bearing material deposited on the surface. Just to top it off the exhaust valve guides are also worn out and will need replacing. So that kind of sucked, but such is life.

Un-deterred I decided to press on start collecting parts.

So the block has been treated with a brand new set of shinny oversized forged pistons and conrods. The head will receive Step 2 cams, new valve springs and retainers, metal head gasket and head studs.

Also ordered some new OEM bits including, new water pump, new oil pump, timing chain kit, gasket kit.

I was lucky to pick up a set of 740cc injectors for cheap aswell, an upgrade from the 555cc injectors that are currently maxed out.

Other goodies I have planned

New motor and gearbox box mounts

Already got a new alloy rad and hoses

extended sump

Custom 3 inch exhaust (CAT back)

New clutch still deciding between a Nismo coppermix and a Exedy sports tuff heavy duty (will see how much money I have left at the end) (currently clutch is rooted).

Engine is still sitting at the machinist, crank is ready to go, block needs to be decked and the head needs re-assembly. Still waiting on a few bits and pieces so they can finish their work which should arrive late this week, early next week. Should be able to pick up the re-freshed engine next Friday and get going on the re-assembly.

A number of people have been asking how much power am I looking for? The answer is don’t really care, the only real upgrade is the cams and that was because currently the power peaks and tapers off at about 6000 rpm so the engine is having trouble breathing at the top end. Cams should remedy that at the expense of a bit of response in the low end. The purpose of the rebuild wasn’t to make more power, it was more about reliability and the ability to go out and have fun without worrying about breaking something.

Realistically If I can get 230rwkw with full boost before 4000rpm I’ll be happy.

So I started to think about what I have to get done in the next 8 weeks, list starts off with time to rebuild the engine, time to change the engine over, time to run in, time to tune then a shakedown run at a local motorkhana in early November with the culmination of a weekend at the Stadium Drift Wakefield Matsuri.

There is so much to do and so little time!

to be continued….
