Shinkansen aka Bullet train

So how do you get between Tokyo and Osaka, roughly 500kms if you don’t have a car? Shinkansen or Bullet train as it is known in the western world. These trains can travel up over 300kmph and leave major stations every 15mins. If you are an international visitor to Japan, you can apply for a JRail passport. Depending on the passport you buy, these passes can give you unlimited travel on JRail trains, buses and ferries.

We opted for the ’14 day, all Japan, Ordinary’ pass, which gave us unlimited travel for 14 days within Japan and upto Hikaru Shinkansen, the second fastest. A Green pass will get you onto Green cars, which is first class, as well as being able to travel on the Tsubasa Shinkansen, the fastest.

The seating is awesome, so much space! I wish planes had this much space in economy.

Keep an eye out for the Warm or Cool rooms at major stations. These rooms are heated in winter and cooled in summer. It was a welcomed relief while we were waiting for trains in the summer.

I definitely recommend getting a Rail pass and plan your trip around them, if you do want to travel between cities. The only catch is that they can only be purchased outside of Japan, so do your research!
