D1GP Round 5 @ Ebisu

D1GP Round 5 at Ebisu was held at the end of August and you may have seen some photos on other websites, as well as know the results of the event. So, I’ll just tell you about our experience at a D1GP.

We caught a Shinkansen (Bullet train) the night before back to Fukushima and stayed at the SunRoute Hotel. ‘SunRoute’ has a chain of hotels across Japan, they are reasonably priced when on special and have a standard that is comfortable.

Anyway, since we were only able to get General tickets at Lawson, we had to turn up early to upgrade our tickets to get assigned seating. Not being sure what early was, we left Fukushima at 7:30am and arrived at Nihonmatsu (the closest town to Ebisu) around 8am. The taxi took around 20minutes and cost 3300yen between the three of us.

Today we were lucky and were able to purchase a SS seating upgrade. It was expensive but worth it as we sat right next to the judges. We could see all the battles clearly and without any obstruction. I did try and take some photos of the drifting but because of the safety netting, they didn’t turn out so I just enjoyed the show!

I’m not sure what the crowd numbers were like but there were a lot. The event was very well organised with a pretty constant amount of drifting going on during set times. Practise saw car after car after car of drifting. Qualifying from my recollection was run a very smart way. Drivers would get 4 laps, alternating between themselves and another driver. While one person was doing a qualifying lap in the drift section, the alternate car would be driving back to the start line in the not so drift section. This looked good as the car would stay warmed up, drivers will be in a good mindset to complete a good drift qualifier.

After the qualifiers, there was a long time set for the pit walk. About 1 and a half hours. The pit area was crowded!

But I did manage to take a few photos:

Team Orange had a very impressive display!

Ueno’s 2J BMW, I don’t remember this actually running and I heard he has been having issues with it the entire season.

Hibino’s AE86 matte Black paint job and stenciled sponsors looked amazingly awesome!

I had to look twice before I realised Yoshioka’s Soarer had fake lights.

As I mentioned earlier, you probably know the result of the round. Suenaga won the event against Hibino.
